What does being a mentor involve?
- Regularly meeting with mentees from different AI safety groups
- Meet weekly with your mentees (for 1 hour) through our three-week mentorship program (with the potential for semester-long mentorship).
- In Fall 2024, more than 80% of mentees received mentorship for the whole semester. Continued mentorship entails bi-monthly meetings after the first part of program has concluded.
- Providing support and guidance to mentees
- Help mentees plan for their semesters using our semester planning document.
- Help mentees work through ad-hoc problems their groups are facing and provide them with different perspectives, access to resources, accountability, and encouragement.
- Share your professional experiences in the AI safety space and share career resources, opportunities, and advice when applicable.
- Regular check-ins and communication with Kairos staff
- We meet with you for a check-in after second week meetings, and a couple of times during continued mentorship.
- The check-ins allow you to discuss questions and problems with Kairos staff, and help us keep up to date on your ongoing mentorship experience.
- We also expect mentors to promptly respond to communication and be able to accurately assess and communicate the state of their mentees’ groups to us.
- Attending a one-off virtual mentorship training
- At the beginning of the program, mentors participate in a kickoff event to learn the basics of FSP, how to mentor organizers, and meet other mentors.
What are the requirements for being a mentor?
- Experience organizing an AI Safety group (or other similar groups, such as Effective Altruism groups).
- We might lift this requirement for applicants with equivalent relevant experience.
